THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has formed a committee to implement the ban on smoking in public.

The committee is made up of the Police and health ministry officials.

NEMA public relations officer Wilfred Banabakintu said yesterday the multi-sectoral committee included NGOs and proprietors of public places. He said it will come up with ways of implementing the ban.

“We shall start enforcing the ban after the committee has studied the situation and come up with a way forward,” Banabakintu said.

He said smoking could not be stopped in one day but the implementation of the ban would be a process. “Smoking isn’t something you can just wake up and stop. This is an issue we are handling slowly,” Banabakintu said.

Bannabakintu added that some public recreational places including leading night spots like Club Silk and Ange Noir had already complied with the ban and had demarcated smoking areas.
