THE Ugandan soccer fraternity was mourning yesterday after one of the country’s greatest footballers Paul Hasule died at Mulago Hospital.
Hasule, who played for the national soccer team, the Cranes between 1982 and 1993, was admitted in Mulago for three weeks where his condition worsened because of a swollen right leg which earlier was operated on.
The versatile footballer came onto the national scene while at Mbale Heroes before spending his entire career at SC Villa.
He won seven league titles as a player with SC Villa and coached them to four titles on top of captaining the Jogoos to the final of the African Club Championship in 1991 and CAF Cup in 1992.
He had several stints as assistant and head coach of Cranes.
He was Police FC head coach at the time of his death.
“He wanted football and wanted everyone to enjoy his fruits. Despite being in another club, he could advise you on how best to get results for your team,†said Police coach Charles Ayieko.
There will be a requiem service at St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe today at 10:00am before his body is moved to Tororo for burial tomorrow.
Local football federation vice-president Godfrey Kwizera was taken aback the news of Hasule’s death.
