Construct flyovers

WORK ON the Kampala Northern
By-pass road will commence shortly.
Further disbursement on the sh105b project, funded by the European Union, will be released later this month, finally actualising the by-pass that has been in the planning for years.

Claimants on land along the road have been paid.
The by-pass will ring the city by 21km, running through the north, north-eastern and north-western suburbs, starting at Bweyogerere, traversing through Naalya to Kyebando on Gayaza Road, then through Bwaise and Namungoona, terminating at the Busega roundabout.

While the ring road should ease traffic flow, and relieve the city centre by diverting vehicles outwards, this otherwise massive project will not on its own sort out all the pressure that increasingly insufficient facilities suffer.
The rate at which new vehicles are getting onto our roads means that the current infrastructure is overwhelmed, resulting in traffic jams even outside of the traditional peak hours.

There are some attempts to ease this, but many times they are only half-hearted. For instance, Kampala City Council has a plan for converting many more roads into one-way streets, but this is not being implemented fast enough. Similarly, a couple of sets of traffic lights has gone up in the last few months, but these are nearly too few.

With the financial year coming to an end, nothing has yet come of the finance minister’s pledge made in last June’s budget speech to introduce flyovers onto Kampala’s road system. Flyovers, strategically placed, would probably make the biggest possible impact on traffic flow in the city, so they need to be given the urgent attention that they, and all road users, deserve.
