LRA rebels on Tuesday night attacked two IDP camps in Gulu and Apac districts, killed 23 civilians and injured 10 others.
The army said the rebels, under the command of Dominic Ongwen, attacked Abok camp in Ngai sub-county in Oyam north county in Apac on Tuesday, killed 19 people and injured 10 others.
The attackers also killed four civilians near Opit forest in Omoro county, Gulu district at about 7:00pm.
The northern-based UPDF spokesman told journalists after visiting the massacre scene that the rebels set ablaze over 200 huts in the camp.
He said the camp had about 10,000 war victims.
“Our forces fought back but most of these people got burnt in the huts,†Paddy Ankunda said.
The injured were taken to Ngai dispensary.
The camp leader, C.P. Ayo, said, “We informed the army that rebels were cited but the detach commander, 2nd Lt. Albert Mugabe, never responded to the attack.â€
Ankunda said the UPDF detachment commander was arrested for failing to execute his duty diligently. By press time, he was still being held at the 4th Division headquarters.
Ankunda said a rebel from the group that attacked Abok camp and massacred civilians, surrendered to the Army at Lalogi sub-county in Gulu district.
The rest of the rebels reportedly headed towards Atto Hills in Paicho sub-county in Aswa county.
Yesterday, two UPDF helicopter gunships were seen flying over Gulu and Apac in pursuit of the attackers.
Early this month, the rebels attacked Odek, Pagak and Lukodi camps in Gulu and Kalabong camp in Kitgum.
