RUBAGA South MP John Ken Lukyamuzi has said the plan to hold a referendum on granting a third term to President Yoweri Museveni undermines the MPs’ jurisdiction and power to make final decisions on legislation.

“We aren’t pictures that are just put there to be watched. If we reject it (amendment of Article 105 (2) of the Constitution) then how do you go to the people? This isn’t a matter of trial and error, we are the people’s representatives. If we say no it’s no,” Lukyamuzi said.

He was recently addressing his constituents during the Environment Day celebrations at Kitebi Primary School.
Lukyamuzi was reacting to the state minister in the Vice-President’s office, Adolf Mwesigye’s statement that Article 105 (2), which talks about the presidential term limit, would be part of the Constitutional Amendment Bill to be passed by Parliament and ratified in a referendum.

Mwesigye recently told The Sunday Vision that ministers recommended that the Parliament should pronounce itself on the proposed lifting of presidential term limit before it is referred to the people in a referendum.
