CASH-strapped Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has started preparations for the mini World Cup by appointing local coaches for the national team.

Former national captain Henry Oketcho was named head coach.
Andrew Meya will assist him prepare for the June tournament in Ireland. The top five teams will qualify for the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

Oketcho replaces Kenyan Tom Tikolo whose contract ended at the end of July and could not be renewed after the cricket body found themselves incapacitated financially. UCA insists they still have plans to bring in an expert from abroad in the future.

The new coach sounded enthusiastic but did not divulge his plans.

“I can not tell you anything now as it may cause conflicts. May be until in two weeks time when we have discussed the plans,” Oketcho said.

Team captain Junior Kwebiiha said: “As players we cannot do much about the selection of a coach. What we have to do is work hard as a team because we know what is at stake.”
