Residents of Njeru town council in Mukono district want the death penalty to be upheld in the constitution.
The residents said people convicted of murder should hang.
“Cases of murder are not only rampant but heinous. Whoever kills another by the sword should die by the sword,” George Kalema, a resident, said, attracting thunderous applause.
This was at a consultation meeting on the government white paper organised by Buikwe North MP Wagonda Muguli at Kasanja in Njeru on Tuesday.
Kalema cited an incident in Njeru five years ago, where Muwanga, a herbalist, beheaded five-year old Shamim.
“It was a gruesome murder that moved everybody to tears. Why should such a person be pardoned? Society would go on rampage if today we heard that Muwanga has been pardoned by the state,” Kalema said.
The residents made an appeal to parliament to look at the penalty as a deterrent against such acts.
The MP assured the residents that he would articulate their ideas in parliament.
