Acholi leaders have applauded President Yoweri Museveni for declaring a seven-day ceasefire with the LRA rebels.

They said the move would be good if the rebels responded positively.
Kitgum LC5 chairman Nahaman Ojwee said, “The Acholi sub-region leaders must appreciate the President. The rebels have all along been blaming Museveni that he does not want peace talks with them. Now the challenge is theirs.”

He said the rebels were misled by people who did not want peace in Acholi land.

Gulu district speaker the Rev. Willy Olango said, “I was so excited about the initiative but the ceasefire needs to be consolidated into a reality. Betty Bigombe, who initiated the move, should be allowed to coordinate the government and the LRA.”

Koch-Goma LC5 councillor Tom Ocitti commended Museveni for the gesture. He said one week was very appropriate because the rebels were prepared for the peace talks.

Atyak sub-county woman councillor Rose Lapor Ocan Opat said the rebels should adhere to the offer to end the war.

Acholi paramount chief Rwot David Onen Acana II and the chairman of the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative, Archbishop John Baptist Odama, said they would release a statement.
