KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has halted a project that was under construction near a major city sewer line in Kololo.

The sewer line in Kololo, a city suburb, is one of the main ones in Kampala, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing Director, Dr. William Muhairwe, said on Tuesday.

He said the line carried sewage from from Makerere University, Wandegeya trading centre, Mulago Hill, Mawanda Road in Kamwokya, Kololo along Acacia Avenue and passed through Kitante Golf Course up to the Bugolobi sewerage works. It serves thousands of people.

Muhairwe said the sewage was treated at Bugolobi before it was released into the Nakivubo Channel.

Last Friday, the Chief Town Planner, Charles Kyamanya, city engineer and surveyor Abraham Byandala, Muhairwe and NWSC engineers inspected the project on Acacia Avenue near Kitante Golf course.

The project was being undertaken by Metropolitan Properties Ltd, the owners of Metropolitan House on Entebbe Road. Kyamanya on Monday said the project was halted until the developers informed KCC and NWSC what they intended to put up.

Kyamanya said although the developers were carrying out site preparations, they erred when they concreted the sewer line. He said no plans had been submitted for the project.

“It is wrong to encase the sewer pipe. We do not want the sewer line endangered like it is in Katanga. The developer has to submit full details of the project, which NWSC and KCC will have to look at. The project is halted and the developer informed,” Kyamanya said.

He added that the architect of the project, George Sendiwala, was called to the site on Friday.

KCC’s action follows a protest from NWSC over the project. The developer had started excavating the land when NWSC protested.
Muhairwe said, “I am happy KCC has come to our rescue. We all saw that it was wrong to construct around the sewer line. We all agreed that the project be halted.”

When contacted at their offices on Entebbe Road, Metropolitan Properties management said they were too busy to talk to The New Vision.
