THE high rate of school drop-out among girls is due to sexual harassment and gender discrimination, state minister for education Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire has said.
She said this while launching the United Nations Girls Education Initiative partnership forum at the International Conference centre, Kampala on Thursday.
“Girls are discouraged by inadequate sanitation and hygiene facilities and limited infrastructure like classrooms and furniture. This exposes them to sexual harassment by teachers and schoolboys,” she said.
Bitamazire said culture forced them to do domestic work other than attending school. She condemned corporal punishment as a way of disciplining students.
Bitamazire called for proper laws on corporal punishment.
