Antonio’s Grill is the sort of joint that has a bit of something for everyone, while at the same time mindful of the need to bear in mind those who are biting the bullet. Despite the plethora of inexpensive eating joints that abound in Kampala, the biggest thorn in their side are the women who persistently ply city streets and offices selling food for a mere one thousand bob.

The secret to the success of Antonio’s Grill is in offering as much diversity as possible, while ensuring that not only is quality not compromised, but also one dines to one’s satisfaction. I must confess that their breakfast by any standard, offers great value for money and I doubt if anybody in town can beat it.

To wit, one can select from the ‘Breakfast Special’ and in the case of the ‘Katogo Special’, be treated to a couple of eggs, chapatti, katogo, tea and a glass of passion fruit juice thrown in for good measure. Around where I live in Bakuli, katogo is sh500, tea with milk the same price, a couple of eggs ditto, or chapatti sh200 and juice the same amount.

And mind you, this is in some horrible greasy spoon, where elbow room is at a great premium!

These guys don’t even have toilets neither do they pay VAT. And by the way, Antonio’s Grill also offers a similarly priced breakfast comprising eggs, sausage, toast, tea and juice. Over to lunch and on any given day, they feature daily specials, which are at the sh2,000 mark. Chicken and chips would be offered on Saturday and Sunday, while fish fillet and chips feature somewhere during midweek.

I mentioned earlier that they have Mex/Tex food, and while it is rather mild for my palette, I was pleased that they have seen it fit to venture out from the norm. Mex/Tex is one of my favourites, and Yasser, the man behind Antonio’s, assures me we shall be seeing Quessadillas, Enchiladas and Chimichangas at his new joint, Oasis, located in the same complex. The food is of a good standard and the service is efficient. Breakfast is SRO and they also do deliveries and out side catering.
