NATIONAL Council of Sports (NCS) has put a halt to its support of Uganda Athletics Federation.

The move is in response to UAF’s continued refusal to respond to an NCS request for a meeting to solve wrangles in the track and field body.

“Council has decided for the moment to freeze all operations with the federation until when the federation takes the necessary action,” reads a November 18 communication to UAF.

Trouble started at the federation’s July assembly where some delegates accused the executive of intentionally sidelining them.

The assembly changed Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) to UAF. There was also the decision of extending the term of office from two to four years.

Several appeals were made to NCS. Council, which is empowered by Act of Parliament to develop, promote and control sports on behalf of government thus called for a meeting between its technical committee and UAF.

But according to NCS general secretary Jasper Aligawesa, UAF has arrogantly kept away.

“To date, no effort has been made by the federation to honour the invitations, which can be rightly interpreted as a deliberate act of insubordination,” says the NCS letter.

Athletics is the biggest beneficiary of NCS funds after football.
Aligawesa says, NCS, which was never invited to the athletics assembly, still recognises UAAF and not the new name.

NCS was also conspicuously missing at a UAF end of year dinner recently held in a club house beneath council’s Lugogo office.
