GULU Municipality MP Nobert Mao considers his Acholi roots an advantage rather than an impediment to his presidential ambitions.

“When I talk to colleagues they say, ha! An Acholi president in 2006? Maybe another Munyankole, a Muga-nda, a Mugisu,” he said.

He was responding to accusations by the Uganda young Democrats (UYD) that he was unavailable when they needed him most. Over 150 UYD leaders were holding a convention at Nabinonya Beach near Entebbe. Forum for Democratic Change activist David Pulkol attended.

Mao said Ugandans should stop mass condemnation of ethnic groups, political parties and military groups for the atrocities committed by only a few members of those groups.

“Individual responsibility should be apportioned for individual guilt. Avoid sweeping statements,” he said.

Mao said the Democratic Party (DP) should stop behaving like a hyena that does not kill its prey and eat the juicy parts but relies on other hunters whose left-overs it scavenges.

He said DP is also like a hunter who throws a spear at a rat, but when the buffalo comes, he has no spear, so he climbs a tree to escape.
