Mbale local government has suspended the construction of parish health centres, commonly known as Health Centre II’s, writes Nathan Etengu.
The district director of health services, Dr. Francis Abwaimo, said on Friday this was to enable the district concentrate on running the existing health units.
He said the government was revising the policy of having a health centre in every parish.
Abwaimo said the donors realised that the parishes were too many to be managed effectively.
“The parishes were too many and they keep on being sub-divided every night. As a result, I have sent circulars to all the sub-counties to stop initiating new parish health centres,” he said.
Abwaimo told a budget framework seminar that the existing parish health centres would be completed and standardised.
He said each of the health units was to be equipped with an out-patients department, staff house, pit latrine and rubbish dump.
