Nabisunsa spends sh85m on roofing

By James Odong NABISUNSA Girls School has so far spent sh85m to replace asbestos roofs with iron sheets in compliance with the National Environment Management Authority warning.Exposure to asbestos fibres has been medically proven to damage the respiratory system, causing a number of ailments including cancer and asbestosis. When The New Vision visited the school on Monday, most of the buildings had their roofs replaced with white iron sheets, save for a few staff houses.The Ministry of Education and Sports recently directed secondary school headteachers to replace all school buildings with asbestos roofs.The acting commissioner of secondary education, John Agaba, asked head teachers to submit to the ministry estimates for the undertaking to identify sources for the replacement. He said funds for the re-roofing of schools were likely to be drawn from the secondary school rehabilitation project.Agaba said schools with the financial means to replace the roofs should start doing so immediately without waiting for funds from the ministry.He asked school boards of governors to treat the issue with urgency.
