By Kiganda SsonkoTHE fact that Sony type of radio is more reliable than many other brands of radio on the market made Kanaabi, a radio trader on William Street, fake a Sony from the similarly named SQNY brand. On May 20, Allan Mugagga, a Makerere University student, and his two friends went to buy a radio from Kanaabi’s shop. What Kanaabi did was to ensure that he rubs off the tail on the letter Q so that it could appear like O, both on the box and the radio itself. As the Mugagga’s entered, they asked for a Sony type and Kanaabi said that he had it. “Here it is. You can observe as critically as possible. It is Sony, ‘stereotype,’ full of base, brand new and durable,” the seller said persuasively. However, it was unfortunate for him because one of them, Alex Murangi, had once been a victim of such fraudulence. After a critical look, they found out it was a faked one. What the seller failed to do to succeed in his fraudulence plan was to check and ensure that all words were changed. The buyers traced one word SQNY inside the radio. They threatened to take him to the Police or report to the Uganda Bureau of Standards but he pleaded for mercy and was allowed to go free by the students.
