The Tororo Chief Magistrate, John Ochepa, Arutu on Wednesday granted bail to the 13 students of Kisoko High school, who allegedly masterminded the violent strike of July 12 at their school. They face two charges of assault and malicious damage to property. The students who are all above 18 years have been on remand for 14 days at Morukatipe Prison. Court rejected an earlier application for bail on the grounds that their immediate release could tamper with the police investigations. When they re-appeared in court each student was asked to produce sh400,000 bail fee. Ochepa allowed the parents and the guardians to stand surety and they were each bonded at sh5m not cash. Two parents managed to raise the cash bail for their sons. The rest said they would sell and and cows to raise the money. Several parents had no shoes or sandals and wore rugged clothes.“He is the only son I have in the family, but I do not know the devil that lured him to participate in the strike. I have sold almost everything to raise his fees, but he has decided to annoy me,” one parent said. Ends
