Uganda is for the first time to host the 16th annual conference of the COMESA council of bureaus on the Yellow Card Scheme.
The conference, scheduled to run from September 26-27, at the international conference centre in Kampala, is a forum that brings together member states participating in the COMESA third party Yellow Card Scheme.
It is a motor vehicle insurance scheme that covers third party liability and medical expenses with a yellow card issued in one COMESA country being valid in all other participating countries.
According to Anne Idro Canawira, the schemes national coordinator, the scheme is currently operational in 12 countriesincluding Burundi, DR Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
She said over 125 insurance companies in participating countries are involved in the Yellow Card Scheme. “Annually, about 60,000 yellow cards are issued, a premium income of over $2m is collected and over 60 claims settled,” she said.
She said that the conference will provide a platform for members of the various national bureaus to share experiences, examine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as well as any other matters of common interest in the development of insurance.
“The purpose of this conference is to review the general operations of the COMESA yellow card scheme, performance of the re insurance pool, more especially claims handling and processing, and of course make recommendations for improvement of the industry,” she said. Ends
