A MINERAL to ensure a healthy growth of flowers for export has been discovered in the eastern district of Mbale.
James Odomel reports that the Canmin Resources Limited managing director, Hans Hansen, in an Interview with The New Vision, said the mineral called Vermiculite, has been tested and recommended worldwide due to its aeration and water holding properties which enables a quicker seed germination and plant growth. “This mineral is free flowing, soft, sterile and absorbent. Its use gives a greater volume of yield and accommodates a high liquid uptake while at the same time retaining good handling characteristics which simplify the process of mixing it with other materials,” Hansen said.
He said vermiculite is well established as a growing medium most commonly in compost formulations often in combination with peat. “Vermiculite is a naturally occurring soft mica mineral which contains magnesium, nitrogen and potassium used to grow hydroponics plants,” Hansen said. He said when mixed with the soil, it improves water retention and fertiliser release, making it ideal for starting seeds and for growing plants.
Hans said the mineral absorbs ammonia, and stops its leaching to underground water supply. Ends
