“MBARARA is the land of milk and honey. But you can't get any young person from Ngarama and Kashumba sub-counties in Bukanga to recruit in the army. They are malnourished!"
These are the words that the district vice-chairperson, Emma Boona used to describe rampant malnutrition in the district.
Boona was recently reacting to the presentation of the member of the child project, Marguerite Tibayungwa, who said that 58% of the children in Mbarara are malnourished and 43.75% are stunted!
At a workshop at the district hall, he said, most people in rural Mbarara only depend on bananas and are very weak. "They don't know that gava mukulya (Its food that gives one strength), she said as people laughed. He also urged councillors to sensitise people about the importance of a balanced diet.
