At least 63 captives were on Sunday evening rescued in separate clashes between the UPDF and the LRA rebels in Kitgum town and Gulu district.

The UPDF spokesman in the north, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said 38 captives were rescued from Bar-Dyang, a suburb in Kitgum town, on Sunday evening when the UPDF pursued a group of rebels.

He said 20 other people were rescued in another encounter in Opette, about 4km northeast of Kitgum town, off the Kitgum-Lira Road.

Security sources in Kitgum town said yesterday another group of rebels commanded by Vincent Otti, was moving towards Kitgum from Pader district over the weekend.

Ankunda said at least two LRA combatants were captured in another battle at Parabongo in Kilak county in Gulu district.

He said the UPDF repulsed a small group of rebels that attempted to raid the camp on Sunday afternoon.
