KANU presidential loser Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday conceded defeat to Kenyan president-elect Mwai Kibaki.

He said his party would provide checks and balances in parliament.

Addressing the press at Serena Hotel, Uhuru said he accepted the verdict of Kenyans “who wanted change and the perception put by opposition which did KANU a lot of damage.”

He challenged Kibaki to fulfil his pledges, adding that he would take up his position as official leader of the opposition in the house and that he would not accept a position in NARC’s government if offered.

Uhuru said the way Kenyans conducted the elections reflected stability and maturity, adding the country had retained its rightful place in the world.

He hailed outgoing President Daniel arap Moi for his dedication and the monumental role he played to ensure a smooth transition.

Despite the fall of KANU heavyweights, Uhuru said he had the team to martial a challenge in parliament and promised to nominate some of the key leaders who lost their seats.

Denying that Moi’s influence contributed to his loss, Uhuru said Kenyans’ quest for change was strong. He blamed “negative” campaign by NARC.

He said he did not foresee the demise of KANU. “We are a mass party; we shall rebuild.”

Uhuru said he was ready to offer himself for the next election if his party cleared him. “I promise I shall deliver,” he said.
