Celtel Uganda intends to cover 38 more towns on its mobile phone network by March 2003, the marketing and communications assistant, Richard Mugera has said.

Celtel is aiming at boosting its market performance and increase its coverage, to win more customers.

“Alongside the extension work going on, we have also opened up 483 more retail points to enable more people access our services,” Mugera said.

He was recently handing out Celtel special gift packs to lucky winners in the Celtel dealership promotion at the Ultra Cellular shop on Dustar Street in Kampala.

In the draw that attracted over 1000 entries, three people won fully connected mobile phones. Twenty others won airtime, while 75 walked away with T-shirts.

Mugera said through the network extension, the company would help improve the communication needs in the country.

“The expansion will enable us get more people on board, and through the connection, many people will be able to talk,” he said.

A jovial Charles Turyahikayo who won a mobile phone, could not remember what item he had purchased to enter the competition. Throughout the function, he had a fixed smile.

Meanwhile Celtel Uganda plans to be more customer responsive, by adjusting themselves to- wards the needs of their subscribers, Jackie Namara, the marketing manager said, writes Stephen Ilungole.

Namara said the development would be in line with what their subscribers have been asking them to do for a long time.

“That will be the bottom line. We are now going to be customer driven. We will always look at the introduction of new value added products,” Namara said.

She said one of the things requested was to change from the dollar based tariffs to shillings.
