Sunguti to pivot Villa

SC Villa has had the reputation of lining up a lethal striking line.

By William Muwonge and Joseph Batte SC Villa has had the reputation of lining up a lethal striking line. The strikers not only tore many defenses apart but also brought to the club a rich collection of trophies. Former professional Majid Musisi, Ronnie Vvubya, Rogers Nsubuga and Zaidi Tebesigwa were Villa’s big strikers in the 80’s. The 90’s belonged to the dreaded Mu-Mu of Andrew Mukasa and Hassan Mubiru duo now wrecking havoc at Villa’s rivals Express. But a different situation prevails now as Villa begins this year’s campaign at the CECAFA Club championship starting in Zanzibar tomorrow. Kenyan international, Maurice Sunguti is the man with the huge task of leading Villa’s attack at the clubs show. Sunguti, one of the league’s leading strikers last year, will link up with his young colleagues lacking international exposure. The talented player will work along with new signings Joseph Kabagambe, Ismail Kigozi. Midfielders Alex Isabirye, Alimansi Kadogo and fast-paced Hakim Magumba to reinforce the attack. The burden on Sunguti is double fold given the absence of Congolese recruit Said Abedi on the team. Abedi and four other top players were dropped from the CECAFA squad on Tuesday for indiscipline and poor form. Sunguti was due to form a twin striking partnership with Abedi. Despite his talent and hard work, Sunguti’s undoing is putting to waste glaring chances. Kabagambe and Kigozi have the potential to transform into good attackers but lack the experience. Both players, making their international debut, need support not only from Sunguti but also from coach Moses Basena to deliver in Zanzibar. Another player who could provide goals is all rounder Phillip Obwiny. The veteran can fill gaps upfront when the situation warrants. At the same time, two players Michael Mukiibi and Tom Muwonge will join their colleagues already in Zanzibar next week. The two are doing exams at Makerere.ends
