A TAXI conductor criticised a Makerere university student’s grasp of English. This happened at the Constitutional Square, when the student, who had boarded from Makerere University main gate, demanded for balance of sh800 after handing over a sh1,000 note. The conductor gave him sh700.The noise that ensued from the heated argument kept other passengers silent, but only for a while.“Man, I swear if you don’t give me back my damn one-hanad bob, I’ll blow you up,” the student said, but the cheeky conductor never seemed threatened. After studying the irate passenger for a while, as though considering whether to give him the money, a totally different thing happened that sent passengers laughing. The conductor said , “Mulabe we Makerere naye tamanyi Luzungu (Look he is from Makerere, but he does not know how to speak English).” He then proceeded to speak in perfect English, implying that there is nothing in English called one hanad bob but one hundred shillings. The embarrassed student hopped off near Radio One offices without his one-hanad bob.ends
