By Allan Turyaguma Former Mbarara district chairman, Justine Sabiiti, has criticised LC5 chairpersons for demanding for an increase in remuneration and titles like presidents or governors of districts.Sabiiti said the chairpersons’ demands were unfortunate, adding that they betrayed their self-centred tendencies. “These chairmen want to turn themselves into some kind of gods and to surround themselves with privileges at the expense of the taxpayers,” Sabiiti said on Tuesday. The chairmen, through their Local governments association, recently petitioned president Yoweri Museveni for an increase in salaries and different titles. “People should not take up local government positions to get wealth. they should go there to organise the people who elect them for sustainable development of their communities,” Sabiiti said.He appealed to the President to reject the petition and instead advise them on how best they could serve the electorate. He said during his time as Mbarara chairman, he survived on allowances. However, a senior official said although there were no salaries for LCs during Sabiiti’s time he (Sabiiti) used district funds for personal advancement.Ends
