THE High Court has ordered former Kampala mayor Al-Haji Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala, proprietor of Kisaasi Forex Bureau (defendant) to pay over sh186m to Barclays bank, reports Hillary Kiirya. The money covers a sh47m debt and interest of 29% p.a on the same (sh47m) from October 1993 until payment in full.Justice Edmund Ssempa Lugayizi said the evidence suggested that the cheques that were the subject of the transaction, were stolen.“From the pattern of events, it is likely that the defendant dealt with those cheques knowing that they were stolen. Society should be put on the alert about this type of bank robbery,” Lugayizi said.Ssebaggala allegedly deposited 13 different cheques with different amounts in dollars to Barclays bank and was paid sh47,852,717 before the National Minister Bank in London cleared them. The cheques were dishonoured by the London bank.Through his lawyers, Ssebaggala denied the claims.Ends
