DEFENDING champion Moses Lumala, seeking a hat-trick of Castrol Independence rally titles, has joined rivals Charlie Lubega and Emma Katto in the race.
Lumala, winner in 1999 and 2001, goes route reccing tomorrow in Jinja, Kamuli, Iganga and Mayuge ahead of the final National Rally Championship (NRC) round next weekend.
“Now that we have Lumala it is certainly going to be an interesting race on the challenging roads in Busoga,” Juma Nkambwe, the rally’s media chief, said.
UPDF driver Ismail Lule (Subaru Impreza), Peter Cleave (Mitsubishi Evo3) and Castrol Rally Team’s Wycliff Bukenya (Toyota Celica ST185) also handed in their entries yesterday.
Nkambwe said over 20 drivers are expected to take part in the Castrol Uganda sponsored event that starts at Sheraton Hotel and head to Jinja.
Co-sponsors for the Uhuru rally are Sheraton Hotel, South African Airways, Fire masters, Jovena, IT Solutions, Pepsi and Dembe FM.
Meanwhile fast rising Arthur Blick goes into the Castrol rally a happy man after receiving a sh5m package from Lonrho Motors Uganda and Toyota East Africa.
Lonrho Motors sales and marketing manager Joseph Tinkamanyire yesterday handed over a cheque to Blick and his co-driver Noella Margachi at the company’s showroom on Jinja road. Tinkamanire said they are considering increasing the sponsorship package for the crew next season.
The package will include tyres and spare parts for the entertaining driver’s rear-wheel Toyota Supra ‘Hissing Cobra’.
