PLAYER’S will walk off with 50% of the cash prizes their clubs will win at the end of the season in the new Nile Breweries soccer league deal.
Apart from the players getting more, sh3m will be spared annually to boost the coaching association.
“One of Uganda’s problems is consistency by players and that is why we have come up to reward those players who appear for their teams for 12 or more matches,” said Nile Breweries Corporate Affairs manager David Nsiyona.
“With this, they will be able to keep their form throughout the year.”
Nile Breweries on Wednesday agreed to a new three-year sh480m sponsorship of the Nile Special Super league. The league kicked of last Saturday.
The league winner of the 2002-3 season will take home sh26m, from sh20m last year.
The coaches association, which has been getting nothing from the sponsors, will walk off with sh3m annually to help them with their work.
“This is how we thought that we can help aid their noble cause of producing better results,” said Nsiyona.
The referees will get sh11.55m while the match commissioners will get sh3.15m in the revised deal.
Meanwhile, Nile Breweries marketing director Mike Olsen has said the company will go solo in sponsoring the league, but has encouraged clubs to get sponsors who are not direct competitors.
“Our past experience has seen a rocky marriage and we are not ready to taste it again,” said Olsen.
He was referring to the sponsorship deal with BAT, Coca-Cola, MTN and Shell, which later went sour.
“It is not easy satisfying four big companies since all have different needs. We prefer going it alone but clubs are free to get private sponsorship.”
