A witch doctor who abducted young girls while masquerading as a ghost was yesterday sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for defilement.

Abdu Saabwe, who demanded for a ransom from his victims’ parents as sacrifice to ssezibwa, a local god, appeared before Justice Lugayizi Sempa for defiling 11-year-old girls at Namulanda in Nakasongola district, on September 14, 2000.

prosecution told court that Saabwe took the girls away purporting to be the ghost of Ssezibwa River, where the girls, their brother and sister-in-law had gone to fetch water.

Saabwe told the brother and the in-law to tell the parents that the “ghost of Ssezibwa” had retained the girls and would release them if offered two chicken and two goats.

Lugayizi, while passing judgement, expressed his surprise that the DPP had not brought more charges against the accused.
