ITALY is to donate US$400,000 (sh650m) to support Ebola survivors and orphans, Ambassador Luigi Napolitano has said. Charles Wendo reports that during the ceremony to declare Uganda Ebola-free, Napolitano said this was a continuation of the assistance the Italian government gave during the Ebola epidemic. The UPDF 4th division donated sh15m to support the orphans and survivors. The division administrative officer, Maj. Jack Mwishambi, presented the cheque. He said the money was a contribution from soldiers of the division who decided to forego part of their salaries. Another cheque worth sh1m was handed over by Omoro MP Absolom Ongom, who is also the chairman of the Acholi Parliamentary group. Ongom said the contribution was from MPs of Gulu and Kitgum districts. Gulu's director of health services, Dr. Paul Onek, said there were 555 Ebola orphans in the district. The LC5 chairman, Walter Ochora, said some of the Ebola survivors were suffering from blindness, loss of memory, mental problems and other disabilities. A total of 173 people died out of the 428 people who suffered from Ebola. Ends
