A haven for coffee lovers

By Angela Wiltshire Coffee is the world's most drunk beverage. Wherever you go coffee is served. In Uganda we have a number of coffee varieties grown locally that are well known to coffee lovers. Mr. Kijjambu, entrepreneur and director of 1000 Cups, has come up with a new innovation in the field of coffee with the aim of offering more knowledge about this most cherished drink. Kijjambu believes that you must know your coffee as well and enjoy it. The various types of coffee on sale include Natural Robusta grown on the lake shores, Bugisu Arabica grown on the slopes of Mount Elgon and Washed Arabica grown in West Nile. The list is endless. Kijjambu says: "There are different stages of coffee. At 1000 Cups, you can buy yourself 25Og of any type of coffee at sh3,000. Only our coffee is affordable and fresh." At 1000 Cups, you are given a chance to learn more about coffee. They have equipment that grinds and sieves coffee. Kijjambu says: "Poorly filtered coffee will cause you to get palpitations due to the residues that are left in it." You are also availed with the latest coffee flavours of the millennium, with recipes that you can apply to make a gourmet cup of coffee in your own home. "I would like Ugandans to gain knowledge about coffee at no extra fee at all," Kijjambu says. The interior decor at 1000 cups is quite unique: The walls are in green and orange, and create a peaceful atmosphere. There are wooden logs on each side of the wall, with different colours and sizes of cups hung along them. Kijjambu says ach cup represents a different type of coffee from a different country. These include Espresso, Cappuccino, Caribbean, Mexican, Irish, Danish, and the famous Arabian Coffee among others. There are also indigenous types prepared by Mr. Kijjambu himself. These are tropical coffee, fruit cocktail and source of the Nile among others. All these drinks are prepared using Ugandan grown coffee. If you are a coffee fanatic, you can buy yourself your favorite drink at an affordable fee of sh1000 to 3,500 only depending on your choice. The setting is so warm and cosy. You can sit by the coffee bar and watch as your drink is being prepared. There are cosy cane chairs, giving an African touch. There is a terrace with nice wooden chairs in case you want to keep in touch with what is going on in the outside world. At 1000 cups, the use of spices and fruits is encouraged due to the health benefits gained by consuming them regularly. Apart from coffee, also served are different types of pastries and cakes. For wine lovers, there is quite a collection there for you too. There are also different types of fruit juices served. The most drunk type of coffee in a week is voted as drink of the week. This helps first time customers to choose what to order in case they are overwhelmed by the varieties of coffee available. On the walls of 1000 cups are wall hangings of coffee art on sale at sh150,000. Kijjambu says: "My dream is to see Ugandans appreciate the different types of coffee grown in their country." 1000 cups offers membership to customers who visit the coffee museum as often as thrice a week at no fee at all. Each member is given a membership card, which entitles them to a discount on all coffees and other drinks served. 1000 cups is open seven days a week from 8:00am.-9:00pm.
