THE UPDF has overrun the general headquarters of Abdallah Yusuf Kabanda, the ADF rebel commander.

By John Thawite THE UPDF has overrun the general headquarters of Abdallah Yusuf Kabanda, the ADF rebel commander. Nine rebels were killed, one of them Kabanda's chief guide and senior intelligence officer. A UPDF corporal, Justus Alobe, was shot dead later in mistaken identity during the offensive on Monday. Army Chief of Staff Brig. James Kazini said the attack took place in the Rwenzori jungles in Kkanombyo on the Uganda/Congo border, some 30kms north-west of Bwera town, Kasese. Two former ADF fighters on Tuesday identified the ADF commander as Wilson Kalyabaiho alias Kilama and and Mulobelyo Mukyeza Watoto. The second in command of the 13th battalion, Capt. Iga Ssajabi, said the operation kicked off at 10:30am on Monday. Kazini said Kabanda's communication equipment and two guns were also captured. He said Kabanda now has only two alternatives. "We will either capture him alive or kill him if he does not surrender." Kazini said ADF had been reduced to less than 100. He said they had also captured four rebels. "Up to 67 others have surrendered since March 24 when we launched the on-going offensive. Ninety others passed out recently after rehabilitation," Kazini said. He said the current operation was aimed at capturing or killing Kabanda. "Kabanda fled abandoning six dry monkey carcasses he was preserving for food," soldiers said on Wednesday. This was the second offensive in less than a week in which the UPDF killed six and captured nine rebels including Kabanda's armoury chief, Moses Kakaire alias Vimbe Hussein. Ends
