House Approves Borrowing AIDS Money

PARLIAMENT yesterday authorised the government to borrow US$47.5m (sh84b) from the World Bank for the new five-year HIV/AIDS Control Project.

By Richard Mutumba and John Odyek PARLIAMENT yesterday authorised the government to borrow US$47.5m (sh84b) from the World Bank for the new five-year HIV/AIDS Control Project. State minister in charge of finance and investment Gabriel Opio moved the motion for a resolution of Parliament to allow the Government borrow the money. Economic monitoring minister Kweronda Ruhemba seconded it. The motion, which received overwhelming support from the House, was also backed by the committees of national economy and social services. The committees joint chairperson, Isaac Musumba (Buzaaya) said that the HIV/AIDS scourge directly affected 2.4 million Ugandans. He said the money will increase HIV awareness. Ends
