By Jude Etyang and Steven Candia A POLICE officer shot and seriously injured a Makerere University student during a scuffle on Thursday night at Ben Kiwanuka street in Kampala. George Babigumira, a first year student of Mass Communication at Makerere University, was shot at about 11:00pm in front of Shell petrol Station opposite Mini price Bata. The Regional Police Commander Kampala Extra, Ahmed Wafuba, said the shooting resulted from a mini-scuffle between Babigumira and two Special Police Constables and a police man. Babigumira was hit in the lower abdomen and is reportedly admitted to the Mulago hospital’s intensive care unit awaiting surgery. “It is true that it happened and we regret this unfortunate happening. He acted carelessly, he is a trained policeman and should have made sure that his gun was not cocked under such circumstances. This kind of behaviour cannot go on,” Wafuba said. Wafuba said the Police were on night patrol when they tried to arrest Babigumira who was running from the direction of the crime scene where alarm was sounding. Ends
