Is America’s conscience clean?

SIR—The United States has rejected $10m offered by Prince Al-Walid of Saudi Arabia towards the Twin Tower Fund. The reason why the United States rejected the money is that the prince negatively commented on America’s foreign policy. Although the Talibans should be condemned in the strongest terms for killing innocent people who had nothing to do with their country’s foreign policy, it is a fact that America’s foreign policy of hegemony and favouritism will follow her like a bad smell. America is a giant, there is no debate about that. However, while it is great to have a giant’s strength, it is a tragedy to use it like a giant. The military option the United States and her allies have chosen are going to be a nightmare because Islamic fundamentalism is not exactly a cup of tea. So, while America is busy pontificating about freedom and justice, it will be necessary to re-examine her conscience in the past and honestly assess whether she has practised the freedom and justice she preaches.
