By Geoffrey Kamali OVER 400 families in Kakiri, Wakiso district, are locked up in a wrangle with Spencon, a local construction firm, over land and attempts to establish a stone quarry in the area. The company recently purchased over 60 acres of land from a milo-land owner, Nabunya Alikisa, in Nakyelongose and Busujja parishes to put up a quarry and stone-crashing machines in the area. about 100 families are to be affected. The residents, however, opposed the project, saying it would cause pollution, noise from the rock blasts and earth tremors which are detrimental to their health. They said the project was not designed to be established in a populated area and that it was likely to affect even the neighbouring villages. “Our pregnant women are at risk of abortion and so are our animals. Stone fragments will crash our houses, so who will be responsible for all this?” they asked. The district LC5 vice- chairman, Haji Abbas Sseguya, and officials from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) have visited the area over the dispute. However, Spencon officials declined to comment, saying they will only address residents when the project is established.
