By Geoffrey Kamali A TOTAL of 55 Ugandans, among them five former Kony captives and a-year old baby have returned from Sudan. The group, which also included Ugandan refugees, who have been living in Sudan for more than 20 years, arrived at Entebbe airport yesterday morning aboard a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi. Their return was organised by the newly re-opened Ugandan embassy in Khartoum and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). A Ugandan envoy in Khartoum said the Sudanese government did not aid the refugees and the former Kony abductees to return to Uganda. The envoy said, “There is a lot of ignorance in Sudan about the state of affairs in Uganda. members of the Amnesty Commission should travel to Juba and Khartoum and talk to Ugandans there.” “Many Ugandans in Sudan are confused about events in Uganda, especially those who served in Amin’s army. The returnees said they had learnt of peace and security at home and requested for documentation to return home,” he said. a total of 49 refugees said they come from the west Nile region and that they fled to Sudan in 1979 when Idi Amin’s regime was ousted. However, four others were detained at Jommo Kenyatta airport in Nairobi for reportedly not possessing proper travel documents. The captives were aided to return by international agencies like the UNICEF, Save the Children Fund and the International Organisation for Migrations. Ends
