2002 dawns

IT IS the end of year! Uganda had a lot to be grateful for in 2001. The country was economically and politically stable. Insurgence in northern and western Uganda was wiped out. Presidential and parliamentary elections were held, strengthening democracy in the country. However, the contest for presidency was marred by incidences of intimidation and violence, with fears that Uganda could tip to the brink. But the tension and acrimony was merely a storm in a cup of tea. Sanity reigned after the spate of election violence. While addressing NEC conference President Museveni said the main focus is fighting poverty and not dwelling on the debate about opening up political space. True. Political parties offer the right of association but they cannot put food on the table of Ugandans. Or money in their pockets. The majority of Ugandans are craving for better living and not political parties. The economy experienced usual ups and downs but did not get worse. With the 5% growth, although under the targeted 7%, it was not bleak. It confirms that growth opportunities are abundant. Inflation remained under 5%. Coffee prices fell and earnings dipped. But fish exports and tourism registered growth. Global factors contributed to the slow-down. But there is hope for the better. Uganda and Rwanda relations nearly went sour but improved. Presidents Museveni and Kagame amicably resolved the tension between the two countries. Uganda started the disengagement from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The launching of the East Africa Community and later its Legislative Assembly and Court of Justice started a prospective journey to regional integration. Let’s resolve to consolidate the achievements, then identify and exploit the abundant opportunities. Tackle the challenges — poverty and unemployment — and make Uganda a better country in 2002. Happy New Year!
