EA rights body formed

AN East African regional human rights organisation was on Wednesday formed to promote good governance and collaboration among human rights institutions in the region.

The Eastern Africa Human Rights Network (EAHRNET), composed of government, and non-governmental institutions was formed by human rights activists at a meeting in Kampala. Members included representatives from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi. Mrs. Faith Mwondha, a commissioner with the Uganda Human Rights Commission, was elected chairperson. The organisation, will among other roles, promote the compliance of the East African governments and civil society with regional and international human rights instruments. Mrs. Margaret Ssekaggya, the chairperson Uganda Human Rights Commission, in a speech read for her said human rights in the East African region were still at an infant stage. Ends.
