UNKNOWN armed thugs on Thursday night attacked a bodyguard of army spokesperson Lt. Felix Kulayigye at his home, and made off with his firearm. Kulayigye was not at home during the incident.

Two thugs, armed with a firearm are said to have carried out the 9:00pm attack in Najjanankumbi, a city suburb. The incident has left both the Police and the army questioning the motive of the assailants.

“We don’t know what their motive was. Whether their target was the body guard and the firearm or something else,” Kulayigye said yesterday.

The matter, he added, was reported to the Police, drawing a swift response, resulting in the arrest of six suspects who by Friday morning were being held at Katwe Police Station.

Kampala South police chief Moses Kafeero confirmed the incident. “The matter was reported to the Police, but I think it is proper for the army to comment on it,” he said.

Speaking about the incident, Kulayigye said the bodyguard, a private, was on guard outside the fence when he was ambushed by the thugs. “The one who was not armed first passed and shortly after, the second appeared with a firearm and put him at gunpoint,” Kulayigye said.

The thugs then disarmed the soldier and fled with his AK 47 rifle with 30 bullets without firing a shot. He hailed the Police for the swift response that led to the arrest, but said no firearm had so far been recovered. The guard yesterday recorded a statement at Katwe Police Station to help with investigations.
