THE Police in Masaka arrested the district returning officer for allegedly receiving a sh200,000 bribe from Abdallah Serubugo a contestant for the Buwunga sub-county councilor’s seat.

THE Police in Masaka arrested the district returning officer for allegedly receiving a sh200,000 bribe from Abdallah Serubugo a contestant for the Buwunga sub-county councilor’s seat.

Southern regional Police spokesperson, Noah Serunjogi said Ephraim Tugume Mugisha was arrested at Masaka district Electoral Commission offices on Friday.

The Police also recovered two envelopes containing sh1m and sh800,000 from him.

Serubugo told the Police that Tugume had asked him for sh500,000 so that he could be declared winner of Buwunga sub-county in Masaka district.

“I did not have the amount he demanded but I told him, l would be in position to raise the remaining sh300,000 at a later date, which he accepted,” Serubugo said.

On Friday, Serubugo had taken sh200,000 to Tugume and the balance of sh100,000 was to be paid after the mission was completed.

Tugume was taken to the southern regional criminal investigations department offices where he was interrogated for about three hours.
He has since been detained at Masaka Police Station.
