Police have been remarkable in curbing violence

VIOLENCE is not an answer for any situation at hand but fortunately, the Police force has been helpful in handling situations that could have been catastrophic.

VIOLENCE is not an answer for any situation at hand but fortunately, the Police force has been helpful in handling situations that could have been catastrophic.

On this note, I would like to commend the actions of the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen Kale Kayihura who on number of occasions has been seen engaging in dialogue with locals during crises.

A few of these include the Kiseka market riots, the election chaos in some areas and most recently the Kyambogo University strike in which he intervened appropriately.

The Police chief’s response to Kyambogo students was remarkable. Despite the circumstances, such action should be emulated by all officers.

The weight of Police pips is unknown to most law enforcement officers. But when that pip is pinned on, it requires a strength and conditioning for which few officers are trained.

Rather than physical weight, it should be pinned on authority and this has been continuously displayed by the IGP. Ugandans should know that violence is not a solution to any situation.

Kyambogo University students recently expressed their grievances and dissatisfaction towards the university administration in a strike that saw destruction of property like computers and furniture.

Some of the issues raised included: non-payment of living allowances, poor hygiene and lack of facilities in the lecture rooms.

t was good to see Kayihura interface with both the students and administration to calm the situation, instead of sending junior officers. Moreso, the Police was quick to respond with teargas to disperse the angry students.
