Mpigi health centre upgraded to hospital

THE health ministry has upgraded Mpigi Health Centre IV to a district hospital.The move followed a tour of the centre by the minister of state for primary health care, James Kakooza, accompanied by the Mawokota North MP elect, Amelia Kyambadde and other ministry officials.

THE health ministry has upgraded Mpigi Health Centre IV to a district hospital.The move followed a tour of the centre by the minister of state for primary health care, James Kakooza, accompanied by the Mawokota North MP elect, Amelia Kyambadde and other ministry officials.
Kakooza said he was impressed with the facilities set up by Kyambadde through the Twezimbe Development Foundation to improve health service at the centre.
“We have upgraded this facility to a hospital status,†Kakooza said, handing over a new ambulance at the hospital premises yesterday. The vehicle was donated by the development foundation.
Kakooza explained that the criteria used for upgrading a centre to a hospital included staff availability, number of cases handled and infrastructure.
The minister said they would expand the mortuary since it is shared with the district.
They also plan to expand and equip the operating theatre, and set up blood storage facilities to cater for mothers in labour and accident victims.
Meanwhile, during the tour, Kakooza discovered some drugs locked up in the store, while patients complained of being forced to buy them from clinics.
Kyambadde was also shocked when she found drugs she donated two months back, kept in another store.
“Why are drugs in the store when patients are suffering?†Kakooza asked, adding that such incidents had tarnished the government’s image.
He said President Yoweri Museveni wanted people like Kyambadde, who were willing to work for their people by supporting government programmes.
Kakooza asked the residents to forget their political differences and work together for better health and economic development.
On her part Kyambadde said her focus was improving health, especially for mothers and people living with HIV.
“I have established a modern maternity ward in Muduma and I am starting another in Buyiga, Kamengo sub-county,†she said.
Kyambadde revealed that she got the ambulance from Pastor Robert Kayanja of the Rubaga Miracle Centre in Kampala.
“I thank Kayanja for fulfilling his pledge. He asked me what I wanted to run my campaigns smoothly and I asked him for an ambulance for my people,†she said.
Kyambadde also gave beds and mattresses to both Mpigi and Kampiringisa health centres.
She promised to work with Mildmay to support those living with HIV.
Dr. Jubilee Abwori, the Mpigi hospital head, said the hospital caters for over 4,000 people within the area.
Others from parts of Wakiso and accident victims on the Kampala-Masaka Road.
The district health officer, Ruth Nasanga, said over 1,600 village heath team members were trained to support health needs in the district.
Mpigi district has 27 health units 18 of which are government-aided.
