When an outsider is favoured

MELODRAMA has a calming effect in times of political turbulence. And Uganda’s drama history is full of such examples when people turn to theatre for political healing.

The play, Basajja Baaka, does not provide political solutions, but is a reminder that we are gifted with hearts despite our weaknesses.

And what better way to expend such themes than in this richly textured family setting. A father (Abby Mukiibi) as family head has given his children the opportunity to decide their destinies.

But with the wrong guidance from their damned mother (Sarah Kagabane), the boys make irrational decisions. They immediately ask for property, which is mismanaged to the dogs and yet the cocks have to roost.

So, the boys return home for survival. They are a disgraced lot that gives life a second chance. Lurking behind them is the family’s adapted child (Kizito Kayiira), who is the moral embodiment of society. He is their father’s favoured and is already running the farm – the lifeblood of the family.

So, when indications point to the “outsider” being the favourite, a power struggle ensues. The play puts emphasis on character development rather than dialogue. The balance between puerility and humour is carefully handled.

That is why this is an effective production that should not have been left in the hands of a less experienced cast. It is hope-relieving to try out new actors but that should be guided by the nature of the play.

First, the guys who play the two adolescent boys are not fully motivated and they make the play frenetic and interminable.

The Bwanikas are not on this stage, and neither are the likes of Patricko Mujuuka – a formidable team that remains very popular in this ensemble.

The other Bat Valley Theatre giants here are John Segawa and Mukiibi. The former is commendably calm while the latter’s efforts are sometimes strained.
