The impression being created is that Parliament clandestinely swore in Katongole a day before he was scheduled to be, in order to beat a court injunction. Let me set the record straight. Katongole wrote to the Deputy Speaker on May 9 informing her that he had urgent family matters to attend to outside the country and was scheduled to fly out on May 17, the day he was scheduled to swear in.

He requested that he be sworn in on May 16 and his request was granted. The Clerk to Parliament always gives special consideration to MPs-elect who have requested to be sworn in earlier, or even later than their scheduled time, if they have genuine reasons.
