Importers of packaging materials have joined the rest of the business community calling for government’s intervention in the declining shilling.

They argued yesterday that unless the shilling stabilises, they will be out of business. “The current economic situation is impacting on our business negatively.

“Before we were buying a tonne of the raw materials used in the manufacture of mineral water bottles at $1,300, but the same materials now cost $2,100,” Suma Kirowi, the Rwenzori Bottling Company director, said.

He was handing over mineral water to support sports activities to St. Mary’s College Kisubi on Saturday. The donation was part of the firm’s sh40m sports campaign across the country.

“We are buying raw materials for making bottles in dollars, but cannot sell the water at the current exchange. This increases our losses,” added Kirowi.
