THE health ministry has developed a safe male circumcision (SMC) policy. The policy will promote voluntary circumcision of men and newborn male babies in the Government and private health facilities.
According to the policy, all referral hospitals would conduct circumcision on men and babies free of charge in the next six months.
Dr. Zaibanu Akol, the AIDS control programme manager, said circumcision would also be carried out in private health units authorised by the ministry at an affordable cost.
The circumcision services, she said, would be advertised as soon as they are rolled out to the regional hospitals across the country.
Dr. Richard Nduhura, the state minister for health in charge of general duties, launched the policy at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala recently.
It will be implemented through the national health plan and national HIV/AIDS strategic plan.
Medical experts involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS hope that the policy would facilitate medical male circumcision to reduce infections.
Akol said male medical circumcision is one of Uganda’s new innovative national response approaches to Aids.
