Tears were shed as Uganda’s netball side to the tenth All Africa games was named yesterday. It was mainly the younger players sobbing while team coach Fred Mugerwa read out the final team at Nakvubo stadium.

“We’ve always been assured that a new team was being built. But it’s mainly the old players who have again be chosen. It’s disappointing,” cried Martha Soigi.

Mugerwa conceded that team selection was a tight call especially after the sport’s quota being drastically reduced by the sports ministry. “So, we had to mainly rely on experience for results,” explained the coach.

Netball had initially planned to send two teams to Mozambique. It was however later trimmed to one team, which was also further reduced from 13 to 10 players.

But while netball might complain of low numbers, it will be even tighter in triathlon. US based athlete Sharif Kakooa will be Uganda’s lone representative in this sport that involves swimming, cycling and running.

Netball: Amono Florence(captain), Peace Proscovia, Dorothy Tabia, Ruth Meeme, Halima Nakachwa, Esther Aawayo, Carol Badaru, Carol Nyafwono, Harriet Apako and Elizabeth Atonet.
