Bantamweight boxer Atanus Mugerwa put up a spirited fight but the effort was not enough to earn him an All Africa Games semifinal slot yesterday.

Mugerwa lost 20-12 to Mozambique’s Watche Macie in a thrilling fight at Maputo’s Pavillion Estrada hall where the Ugandan camp however felt their boxer deserved better.

Coach Kent Musa said the jury had not treated his fighter justly. “Atanus was at his counter punching best. But it seems his points were awarded to his opponent. Well, maybe that is what they call home advantage,” noted a disappointed Musa.

The coach’s sentiments were understandable especially after his other fighters Zebra Senyange and Sula Segawa also lost controversially.

Ganzi Mugula meanwhile failed his 50m breaststroke swimming campaign yesterday. He finished 19th out of 24 in the one lap event. He clocked 36:03secs.
